About This Shock Site
|
NEDM (an abbreviation for "Not Even Doom Music") is a well-known internet meme that originated in the mid 2000s on the platform YTMND. Within the community of those who enjoy "screamers" (jumpscare-based content) and shock media, the term is often associated with a specific type of jumpscare—featuring eerie or absurd imagery paired with sudden, jarring music from the iconic game *Doom*.
Content[edit | edit source]
The video captures an act of animal cruelty. At the beginning of the clip, a person takes a small metal pot, places it among some fibers, and tosses it onto the grass. He then pours a substance presumably a flammable liquid from a plastic bottle onto the animal’s cage and sets it on fire, causing the cage to become engulfed in flames.
The video made its way to YTMND. A user on the website YTMND commented on the video, writing: "Still... nothing justifies 5'ing burning kittens. Not even Doom music." Before long, the acronym "NEDM" evolved into a grassroots meme a form of protest against animal cruelty. Users began creating a wave of parodies in which an image of a rescued cat wearing sunglasses would appear, set to E1M1 (At Doom's Gate), effectively "overwriting" the original, cruel video.
Trivia[edit | edit source]
- Mottles the cat, who became the face of the meme, survived the incident and was rescued; the animal abuser was sentenced to actual prison time, thanks to the actions of online activists.
- In certain Flash games and horror-themed maps from 2006–2008, NEDM was featured as a secret Easter egg: if a player entered a hidden room, the music would begin to play and an image of the cat would appear.
