Corpse01 (also commonly known in the Garry’s Mod community as "Hobo" or "Bum") is a standard 3D dead body model (corpse01.mdl) frequently used in games running on the Source engine, most notably Half-Life 2 and Garry's Mod. The model achieved widespread recognition and became a cult internet phenomenon due to the disturbing real-world origin of its face texture.
History and Origin[edit | edit source]
The model depicts a human corpse with severe burns and tissue damage. For many years, players paid little attention to this asset until 2022, when members of the online community conducted an investigation. It was discovered that the model's face texture was taken by Valve developers directly from a real photograph of a burned corpse in a medical textbook, with only minor edits and touch-ups. The identity of the deceased individual whose photograph served as the basis for the texture remains unknown.
Impact and Community Reaction[edit | edit source]
The model became a staple asset for custom maps, screenshots, and machinimas in Garry's Mod due to its dark and gritty atmosphere. Players eventually ported the asset to other platforms, including Roblox. Following the revelation of the texture's real-world origin, some players began creating mods that replace the edited face model with the original, unedited photograph of the real corpse. This discovery sparked a wave of creepypasta-style speculation and anxiety among fans. Players began to wonder: if real photos of bodies were used to create Corpse01, was the same approach applied to other unsettling models in Valve's games (such as beta zombie models)?
