Hong Kong 97 is a shock game made by HappySoft. It was released in 1995.
Gameplay[edit | edit source]
Upon starting the game, options for three different languages appear. Those languages are English, Japanese and traditional Chinese. A black screen with text saying that HappySoft will sell the player’s original S-NES games. The title screen of the game shows Jackie Chan (referred to as Chin).
In the game, the player plays as Chin, who must shoot and dodge Chinese people coming down from the top of the screen. When shot, these enemies blow up into mushroom clouds, leaving a blinking body and items that kill instantly or make you invincible for a little while. After some time, cars come out from the sides, moving across the screen as barriers. Once the player beats thirty enemies, the last boss, a big cut-off floating head called "ultimate weapon" Tong Shau Ping, shows up. It tries to land on the player. When the head is beaten, the game starts over with a loop. The game shows still pictures in the background that change between Maoist, Guilin, the Asia Television logo, the Chinese Coca-Cola logo, and Mao Zedong in black and white.
The game over screen shows an image of a corpse from the Bosnian War. The image was taken from a Japanese mondo film titled "New Death File III".
