During lap 22 of the race, Renzo Zorzi’s car caught fire near the pit straight. Two teenage marshals sprinted across the live track—a catastrophic decision.
Pryce, driving over 170 mph, unknowingly approached the hillcrest.
Van Vuuren, clutching a heavy fire extinguisher, was struck head-on.
The impact instantly disintegrated van Vuuren’s body.
